An update on ME/CFS education

We envision a world where ME/CFS-informed clinicians are accessible to all. That’s why Open Medicine Foundation (OMF) and Bateman Horne Center (BHC) partnered to create the Medical Education Resource Center (MERC)—a program dedicated to training healthcare professionals worldwide in diagnosing and treating ME/CFS and related conditions.

To date, MERC has:

  • Reached nearly 20,000 healthcare professionals across 95+ countries and all 50 U.S. states
  • Delivered 37 expert-led lectures in 2025 alone, spanning 30+ medical disciplines
  • Published and released the first Clinical Care Guide for ME/CFS and Long COVID — already downloaded 50,000 times
  • Accumulated over 8,800 hours of clinician watch time on VuMedi and 1.5 million lifetime YouTube views

Looking ahead, MERC is focused on expanding the impact of these efforts through five key priorities:

Expanding into academic settings — targeting medical schools, residency and fellowship programs, and academic medical centers to integrate MERC resources into curricula and clinical training.

Advancing the Clinical Care Guide — disseminating across teaching hospitals, community clinics, and professional organizations to make evidence-based ME/CFS care more widely available.

Developing companion resources — creating concise handouts, quick reference tools, and modular materials based on clinician and community partner feedback, designed to work independently or alongside the Clinical Care Guide.

Leveraging multidisciplinary expertise — engaging clinical partners alongside BHC’s education liaison, education director, and communications team to ensure both clinical accuracy and community usability.

Producing supporting educational content — including videos and digital tools to improve accessibility and support different learning environments.

The MERC continues engagement with professional and regulatory stakeholders, including medical boards, continuing education platforms, and national organizations, to support broader alignment with evolving standards of care.
