Differential expression

Differential expression is a way of looking at differences in protein levels (gene expression) between groups. When comparing a disease group to a control group, differential expression analysis can identify proteins that are at higher (upregulated) or lower (downregulated) levels than controls, providing insight into biological differences between the groups.

In ME/CFS research, differential expression analysis is an important avenue for trying to understand underlying mechanisms of the disease.

At OMF’s Collaborative Center at Uppsala, the team has utilized differential expression analysis on proteomics data collected on cerebrospinal fluid samples from people with ME/CFS with and without postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). The investigation tries to understand how POTS contributes to variations in the disease. Read more about the study here: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-026-46965-1
