Repeatable vs reliable

A healthcare professional in a white coat and stethoscope reviewing documents on a clipboard at a desk.Repeatable is a term that is used to describe when something produces the same result under the same conditions multiple times (precision). Reliable is a more broad term that encompasses repeatability, but also includes how close it is to the real answer (accuracy) and consistency over a longer time frame.

The concepts of repeatability and reliability are particularly relevant for outcome measures in studies on ME/CFS. It’s important for researchers to understand how reliable the tests they use are for what they are trying to evaluate (e.g., whether a survey asking about cognitive function is actually providing good information about that person’s cognitive function).

At OMF’s Melbourne ME/CFS Collaboration, the team is assessing the repeatability and reliability of the FUNCAP questionnaire as a measure of in-the-moment functional capacity. Read more about this part of the Personalized Treatment Trials project on our website.
